Great news for fans of the cult classic! Spaceballs 2 is officially happening!

Here's the rundown of what's going on:

  • Official Greenlight: Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit the sequel, with a planned theatrical release in 2027.1 This means it's coming out roughly 40 years after the original!2

  • Mel Brooks is Back: The legendary Mel Brooks, the mastermind behind the original, is returning as a producer.3 He will also reprise his role as Yogurt, the Yoda-esque character.4 In a hilarious announcement video, Brooks joked, "After 40 years, we asked, 'What do the fans want?' But instead, we're making this movie."5

  • Original Cast Members Returning: This is perhaps the most exciting news for fans!

    • Rick Moranis is set to return as Dark Helmet.6 This is a significant comeback, as Moranis has largely been retired from acting for decades.7

    • Bill Pullman will also reprise his role as Lone Starr.8

  • New Additions: Keke Palmer (known for "Nope") is joining the cast in an as-yet-undisclosed role.9

  • Creative Team:

    • Josh Greenbaum ("Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar") is set to direct.10

    • The script is being penned by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad.11 Josh Gad is also expected to star in and produce the film.

  • Plot & Title: The official title and plot details are being kept under wraps. However, the film is being humorously described by the studio as "A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film." Expect it to continue the tradition of parodying the ever-expanding "Star Wars" universe and other major franchises. Mel Brooks' announcement video itself pokes fun at the sheer number of sequels, prequels, and spinoffs that have emerged since 1987.

  • Paying Tribute: The film will undoubtedly have to address the unfortunate passing of beloved original cast members like John Candy (Barf) and Joan Rivers (the voice of Dot Matrix).12

This has been a long-hoped-for sequel, and the involvement of original stars like Rick Moranis and Mel Brooks himself has generated a lot of excitement. "May the Schwartz be with you!" as we await more updates.
